That's a good question - I think with system activation by default activated mechanisms will stay around, though obviously the kernel can page them out. The clock applet mechanism (http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gnome-panel/trunk/applets/clock/gnome-clock-applet-mechanism.c) has its own 30-second timeout but it's kind of a hack. It's something we should look at addressing - unfortunately just calling exit() after 30 seconds I believe creates race conditions, and to fix it correctly will need special DBus support.
