What is important? Well, it's not rocket science (and don't ask for

Exactly! No need to actually study when we can just make stuff up!

Or better yet, let's indulge in some satisfying mental masturbation
about what a user or a computer is, what's the meaning of life, and
what can we do to address _all_ of the world's problems at once.

Seriously, if we have studies, let's use them. Sure. But I've been
long enough in the Linux community to know that if you want something
stopped in its tracks, you just start a meta-discussion that can
last forever. And everybody has a chance of showing just how fscking
intelligent they are in understanding all the subtle nuances in the
semantics of such difficult concept as "user", "normal", and so on.

Meanwhile nothing gets done, and the entire mess perpetuates itself
by years in a lot of cases. Sorry, seen too many such discussions to
still believe they lead anywhere productive.

Sorry, you are on the wrong thread for this argument. In this case something was done which many people object to. They have given their reasons and even proposed alternatives. It is the side that says keep the change that is forestalling any meaningful discussion.
