It has been that way for a *long* time.  When something goes wrong I
can't fix in X11 usually hit "Ctrl-Alt-F1" to get the login prompt, like
 *lots* of other people I assume.  That suddenly stops working.  Be
prepared for lots of people wondering where the text console is gone to.
