That's a good technique, but wouldn't it follow the system style more closely to put install/firstboot setting snippets somewhere under /etc/sysconfig with the stock alias file including from there?

Hm... I wrote a firstboot patch ages ago (almost 3 years ago?) that let you say "send root mail to this user" when you added a user in firstboot... Its even in bz somewhere, iirc...
