We really should find a way to make this just work. How about adding a quirk list for this to hal and make hal set the powerdown timeout to like 5 minutes on affected laptops?

Why not just make the driver lower the volume when you're not playing any sound? (I suspect that will also cause it to take very slightly less power, as well...) How long does it really take the hardware to adjust it back to the setting we're displaying to the user in the event of a noise?
