The fact that the developers have said so on public mailing lists.

nVidia chooses to wait until a distro is shipping a new X before working
on it; that is nVidia's problem to support.  Would it be Microsoft's
fault if nVidia is told about changes to the driver ABI (with all the
necessary information provided), but nVidia chose to wait until the new
version of Windows was on store shelves before working on a new driver?
