I *have* done so, locally, for my own benefit, during the modularisation effort. I can assure that while it eases maintenance in the long term when it comes to updating small parts of the infrastructure (new driver -> one new, small package to build and for people to download) you do *not* want to try to maintain it yourself, unsupported. Seriously. Of course, you *could* just go ahead and prove me wrong.
