+1 but you can get your ip from the network applet, how many "average"
users are dropping to a terminal to do anything?

In which case, why continue to argue that users will be confused that ifconfig is in their path? By your argument users have applets and powerusers have the terminal where /sbin/ would be a great convenience to them.
