BIOS, hard drive and storage controller firmwares, CPU microcode etc
etc. Crippling, or making things useless, to prove a point seems to be
fashionable however.

I agree, when we can offer no free alternative crippling peoples setups is just a way of ensuring we have fewer voices to speak for freedom in the long run. We should pick our battles to win the war.
