This is probably something best addressed (for now) by a wiki page with
some good info on how to make using the upstream tarball work nicely. (I
don't have the CLA signed or wiki edit at the moment either, so although
I'd like to start with the wiki page I can't do it this week... finals
coming).
I guess I could have just posted a few steps here now
- thanks Felix Miata and Jason Tibbits for the clues
1) yum install compat-libstdc++-33
2) download firefox 2.0.0.12 tarball at www.mozilla.com
3) extract, keeping the directory structure, tar -zxf firefox-2.0.0.12.tar.gz
4) start firefox and create a new profile, ./firefox -ProfileManager
5) create a launcher or make an alias to start with that profile
/path/to/firefox/firefox -no-remote -P profileforff2
6) edit your launcher for FF3
firefox -P profileforff3 %u
I think there are problems with getting requested URIs to load when done from
other apps when both firefox versions are open this way (deskbar can't open any
windows, clicking links in 'about x' windows fails, etc).
