Non gnomish?? Please find a better reason than that. Or is Fedora et
al putting all this effort in just for Gnome users?

Fedora has more GNOME developers so more effort is obviously going to go there but I don't see any reason for you to be offended by that. nm-applet is GNOME specific so obviously it should follow the general GNOME design ideas. Besides, if you are designing a UI for general users, not exposing too much technical terms just makes sense.
