This bug not only affects font hinting options (which are not taken into account anymore) but also GNOME system sounds which were muted until I removed gnome-settings-daemon and downgraded control-center and gdm according to rawhide as of 2008-01-17. gnome-settings-daemon had been introduced as a new package in rawhide on 2008-01-18.
