The compatibility isn't accidental. Unlike Ubuntu, which exists to fix issues in Debian, Centos is modified as little as legally permitted.
A yum repository for RHEL/Centos containing as many as possible of the additional packages available in fedora would pretty much fill the need being discussed here. Or several, if the primary one won't include Sun Java, vlc + codecs, and Nvidia/Ati drivers.
