We just had a discussion on fedora-games:

http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-games-list/2007-December/msg00017.html

Basically OpenAL has been overlooked in the whole Pulseaudio integration
project. (and hell, ALSA integration) It defaults to OSS, and has been
since the beginning. Which doesn't work. It also does not work with
Pulse's ALSA redirection. SDL works. The consensus was to make OpenAL
default to using SDL in F8+. (It also needs to default to ALSA in F7-)

A bug was filed, and it seems there is an update in testing:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=420991

So basically, anything using OpenAL is going to start needing SDL (but
not SDL_mixer) very soon. The list of things needing OpenAL, just
looking at my own systems, includes:

rss-glx
openarena
blender
quake3
secondlife
