It has three APIs it can use: ALSA, SDL, and esd.  I had it set to ALSA during the pre-F8 days.  I'll try one of the other two and see if the problem goes away.

unfortunately not the most mature code in existence. It has been
around for a while, but we're now the first ones to actually use it
beyond basic testing.
