One problem with the GECOS field is that if the information comes from LDAP, it will be ASCII only. (The cn field in LDAP is a UTF-8 string, but nss_ldap doesn't care about it.) In /etc/passwd you can put arbitrary bytes so UTF-8 works there, but not with LDAP. Hmm...
