-1 to stopping the use of +1 and -1, but +1 to stopping garbage
replies, ;).

My earliest encounter with feedback mechanisms that use +num and -num as
a means of communication would probably be slashdot. Polls and voting
systems are kind of like that, but they were only ever used in sentences
when forums became popular. It actually has a nice mathematical ring to
it. More accurate and pure rather than just saying "I agree" (+1) or "I
strongly agree" (+100).

As much as I like to see grammar and proper use of the language
maintained, I would value effective communication above it. +1/-1 gets
the message across while saving bytes. Same goes for smileys, ;).
