But why don't you forward the report to upstream instead of complaining in 
Bugzilla and here? If upstream says "no", then you can tell us about their 
reasons, which will also hopefully include a sane suggestion about what to use 
instead (not a crude hack like your hand-set LIBS; if hardcoding the library 
and nothing else is really all that's needed, that's what AC_CHECK_LIB is for).

Now, Chris could (should?) have talked to upstream directly, however, I don't 
think forwarding a request like this is undoable.
