laptop mode does not spin down the disk. It just clusters IO.

And it's useful everywhere, not just when on battery...


Let me say that again: Power saving matters everywhere, not just on
battery. Just ask any sysadmin who runs a datacenter...

I didn't say it does not matter I  just explained  what gpm does  in fact  I run a patched  x86_64 tickless kernel on my server because power savings _do_ matter ;)
