Now that I have read the whole thread, the proposal to change defaults in file selectors instead of creating directories has already been suggested. I personally agree much more to that approach than with an automatic creation of directories. Something I didn't exactly understood is how and when exactly those directories are to be created (in the advocated approach, that I don't like ;-).
