The first problem is that the keys are initially unmapped; a secondary
problem is that some controls (eg. volume popup) don't respond to the
volume keys when they probably should.

Thanks for the reply - yes I can write to xmodmap but should every user
do this?
Couldn't I add a new keyboard type to the system which already includes
the mappings, maybe even have anaconda detect the keyboard?
