For SMP systems, this kind of bug has been around for ages, see my almost
prehistoric bug report from 2001:

The kernel got finally fixed in November 2005 and is broken again since
January 2006. Curious to see, that UP systems are now hit, too. Adding the
"noapic" kernel option did the job for me.
