Confused fedora user confesses "jpg's make my system crash"

[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index]

Hi i'm Chris .. and i'm a fedora user ..

My problem ? Any time i even try to look at a jpg, whatever the content
it may be, however innocent! It makes my gnome stick its feet in the air
and play dead while letting out a deathrattle thats ... well ...
disconcerning.

First i found a nice little picture to use as a background, for example
(because its so soothing, which is something i need right now) lets
take:
http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/teams/art.gnome.org/backgrounds/GNOME-Peyrouse_1280x1024.jpg

I open it up in my trusty fox-which-is-on-fire and i see a lucious
landscape, soothing and calm, i like it! So spontanious as i am i save
it to disk in my home folder!

My firery-fox is so smart, it opens up nautilus for me, and ... *shiver*
it tells me nautilus crashed the moment it tries to render a thumbnail!
Nautilus is as i write this in a never ending loop of crashing,
restarting, opening a root folder window, and crashing, repeat
ad-infintum.

So not being fooled so easely as any old user, i think to my self "i
will install all the relavant -debuginfo packages!" And did a rpm -qf on
all of /usr/lib/*.so.*, cat /dev/null > .recently-used, removed
everything from ~/.thumbnails and made sure yum thought i was fully
upgraded and went on to find a simple testcase.

Easiest way to 'crash and burn' is to simply
 # eog GNOME-Peyrouse_1280x1024.jpg

And it tells me in a frightning voice:
# eog GNOME-Peyrouse_1280x1024.jpg

So i go on to gdb it, run eog, file->open the same pic, it displays it and then crashes with the error in the gdb console:

"ls

So it seems its the thumbnailer makes it go boom ... more as soon as it
starts to gnome_thumbnail_factory_save_thumbnail, it blows up

Same happens with F-Spot, gives me a:
GLib-CRITICAL **: g_convert: assertion `str != NULL' failed
aborting...

And if i gdb gthumb:
(gdb) run

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? And how to get my
gnomes to like jpg's again?

Ps this all crashing and burning does NOT happen with .gif and .png etc
images, it seems to be jpg only..
