Yeah... sorry for the delay. I've been sounding out people on a Change
Proposal to do precisely what you mention - have a new, breaking update
in Rawhide, and a compat version, and try and rebuild every dependent
package against the new version first and failing that modify them to
build against the compat package.

Would you be interested in helping out? This probably counts as a
system-wide change, I'll try and have it written up next week after
Thanksgiving.
