Why though? It doesn't make any sense that a program only works
when ptrace is more restricted unless it's deliberately checking
that setting and refusing to run when it is zero.

Atm, no idea. The answer lies with 1pass.

Setting it to 1 might be fine for an average user but for anybody
using their machine for development work it will be a real problem.

Anyone "using their machine for development work" is a far more likely candidate for making necessary changes to their own systems than a non-dev user.

If, though, you're using it for dev work AND concurrently using 1pass for, e.g., ssh key mgmt, then ... can't argue with you.
