One of the reasons I use to justify getting my company's open source projects in distributions like Fedora and Debian is to surface issues when compiling against various compiler+library+app combo as you noted but as importantly, architecture specific issues. Preserving the build artifacts so they can't be tampered with during the test run is probably worthwhile though.
