People have been studying it and quite hard. There is a big difference in
most technologies between the real techies, the early adopters and the majority

They want different things, they behave in different ways and they have very
different priorities. Borrow a copy of "Inside the tornado" (Moore, G. 1995)
and read about "crossing the chasm"

That assumes the people your product must appeal to are those who use it, and
them alone, its not usually so simple
