I'm not quite sure what "less" behavior you mean, so I'm
only guessing.

If you mean that more doesn't exit automatically when you
reach EOF, that looks to be due to:

    df6b29d3b (more: POSIX compliance patch preventing exit
    on EOF without -e, 2021-09-29)¹
