(Eventually) going down the pam-u2f upgrade process was on my infinitely countable TODO list for some time. Thanks for raising it! I am also willing to be a (co)-maintainer for pam-u2f if needed/necessary/desired (I am the maintainer for what will end up being a new dependency with a recent pam-u2f, i.e. libfido2). As I recall, upgrading pam-u2f to a recent release would allow orphaning/removing of a couple of the dependencies (libu2f-server/client). FWIW, I have been building (recent) pam-u2f versions in copr for my own use for a while now (so I even have a recently valid spec file should one want).
