Personally, I've filed dozens of usability bugs against gnome and for the most part they have been taken very seriously. The developers (and I am not a Gnome developer) seem to respond very positively to me comments on usability. My experience is that Gnome developers do not think they are "", and are more than willing to address usability issues. Food for thought: Maybe this isn't a usability issue, but instead is a personal peeve about how you think it should work. Maybe it has to do with how you approach the situation. Maybe it has to do with just accepting that other view points are also valid.
