Is there really no better solution?

A general comment: I feel it is a shame that more language ecosystems don't provide source distributions of packages.

The only one I am really aware of is Stackage for Haskell (about ~2500 compatible packages from Hackage).
I know this is not easy and does not come for free, but I am surprised there is not more demand for package sets.
It would certainly be a big win for distro packaging.
