The problem is that the current "work[s] quite well" situation relies entirely on a small number of volunteers (including me), who don't even want to maintain Java packages. If I alone decide to finally give up on Java packages in fedora (because why not?), you can say goodbye to almost 200 Java packages (not including dependencies). The original package maintainers either vanished, stopped working at Red Hat, or decided to shift their work entirely to the java Modules (maven + ant + javapackages-tools) instead (work that does not benefit the majority of users, and almost no other packagers).
