What a strange conclusion to draw from the comments. I recommended the "good ole pipe" route as a way to avoid numerous issues caused by the API use in the specific case of gdb use (biarch and all).

There never was anything wrong with 3rd party apps using librpm API, that's what it's there for. It's just that most people don't realize just how much extra baggage comes with it, and aren't happy when they find out.
