In GNOME, it used to be a dropdown with these default options:
home
public
trusted
work

I don't see how this could possibly be too confusing for "non-power users". 
Just default it to something safe, like "public", is what I'd suggest. That's 
what the default used to be. Additionally, I can't see anything that can be 
enabled using GNOME's GUIs, other than VNC, which would bind ports.

KDE has that as a dropdown right now, and the KDE Spin is not affected by the 
decision of the GNOME folks.
