Why is it when I say that I don't want to clutter up my email with mail from mailing lists I'm told it's a misconfiguration.  It's not a misconfiguration.  I don't want the forum email cluttering up my mail - and I don't want to use an NNTP gateway, I want to use Discourse.  Why is that so hard to understand?

This is just due to your configuration. You could easily either save the
mailing list to your mailbox, or use an NNTP gateway.
