Thanks for clarifying, Björn. I'll stick to my re-definition of the
macro for the time being---these builds are hard to debug already, so
I'd rather all the options be explicitly set.

Adding the -UVAR bits will make the invocation similarly long, so I
don't see a real advantage there either.
