Okay, so maybe that LV is damaged beyond repair. I created a new one out of the unused space in the VG and tried again. Same result. CPU pegged at 100%, installer completely unresponsive.
For the benefit of anybody with the same problem, the CPU pegged at 100% + unresponsive installer problem is this bug:
Fortunately, I can give my VM 2 GB to install, but wow. The combination of those two bugs is pretty nasty.
