I think the best way to avoid these problems is have any all changes
go through the maintainer... Now I understand build issue where 
the flux capacitor breaks and the issue needs to be fix relatively
quickly... fine... but is was not the case... This was remove/changing
logic in the packaging... which easily gone through the maintainer 
via the push mechanism.

Now when something breaks from a change like this... Who are you going to call? :-)
Not the Ghostbusters... the maintainer and if the maintainer didn't even know
about the change... how fair that??
