I believe there is something wrong in the recent (several months) nouveau driver. So chances are high that your machine will default to Wayland as soon as you switch off secondary videochip.
There are some rhbz tickets related though.

repos active and both systems default to X and will not start on
wayland.
This was not he case with Fedora 24 where you could select in the gdm
login screen and end up with the chosen session.
At the moment both gdm and and session default to X under gnome.
Gdm debug log confirm the fallback but does not provide descriptive
error messages why.
