I use GNOME all the time, and gedit just took 6s to be usable (counting from click on 'Text Editor' in the Accessories menu).
This is a Pentium 4 Mobile at 2.8 MHz and 512 MB of RAM (filled at approximately 75%).
Ah! That explains the slowness... 2.8Mhz is even slower than my old XT :-)
Now seriously: something is going on wrong, since gedit tooks 2 seconds to open on my Northwood P4 2Ghz with 512MB running Xen with concurrent 2 domains running.
