It certainly appeared to > work for me (with or without esd)... Correct. Really it needs to be slicker: kudzu or HAL needs let the system know if the sound cards support hardware mixing. DMIX can then be selectively enabled or disabled on that basis. Of course, I'm not volunteering to do that ;)
