There are so few cards with hardware mixing support these days that it doesn't make sense to postpone software mixing any longer (and perhaps dmix will one day smarten up and use hardware mixers when they are available). Non sound daemon mixing is going to be one of those major distro milestones like the WIMPified Anaconda installer, defaulting to antialiased fonts, including yum or EDID support in X. We "just" need ALSA support in those apps not supporting esound or ALSA now (hint hint BZflag :). Oh and for SDL to default to using ALSA rather than OSS...
