Hi Jens,
the plan is to integrate GNOME Shell extensions in Software (all, not only the ones that are packaged) because Mozilla is going to discontinue support for NPAPI plugins which will also affect the GNOME Shell Integration plugin and make it impossible to install extensions via extensions.gnome.org. There is some initial discussion about it, but it's a different inicitiave because it requires more than just writing metafiles and GNOME Shell extensions are not app add-ons.
