Ive a DELL laptop running a i830M chip, and it works fine, including
accelerated 3D.

I'm unsure about the current xorg driver, but on this laptop, previous
XFree86 drivers had problems if certain BIOS versions were used. The
latest BIOS's did not return correct memory size information, so only
the lowest resolutions worked, as it defaulted to 1MB memory available
to graphics. 

The solution was to downgrade the BIOS by a few revisions.
