I've suggested at least a single selection during/after install once, because I knew that there is a 'strong' resistance against adding new configurations/features at least in GNOME (And I don't have much hope that I can convince them to do so, like what happened at [1]).

Anyway, the ideal solution which I'd like to see (or someday implement somewhere!) is what I've proposed at [2] or [3]: network profiles for different connections, which include all network connection dependent settings: proxy settings, firewall settings (like firewall zones which (surprisingly!) has been added), background connection permission, sharing, etc. Yes, it should be implemented to be as simple as possible, but it should be there! Personally, I prefer "Complicated UI" to "No UI"; but I agree that Good UI is better than both.
