Are you calling it from your .bashrc?  A simple thing like this should
do (basically, only run setterm when connected to /dev/tty[0-9]*):

tty=$(tty)
[ "$tty" != "${tty#/dev/tty[0-9]}" ] && setterm <your setterm args>
