Ideally, yes, but given the upstream willingness to incorporate
community-proposed changes, I fear that we may in fact introduce
downstream symbol versioning.

There is support for appending a unique suffix to all exported symbols. See @DB_VERSION_UNIQUE_NAME@ in the sources. It is not ELF symbol versioning, but it might help.

The conflict between development packages remains, though.
