I actually proposed a moderately large overhaul of the live image
kickstarts some years back which would've gone some way to solving at
least some of the cruft:

it never got adopted because it wasn't perfect (only, you know, better)
and is now wildly out of date and I just can't work up the energy to
rediff it. :/
