I am not a windows person but I liked the way event viewer allowed to select and re-sort entries, even with their very limited capabilities.
In contrast, I kept feeling annoyed by the difficulty of doing simple things with /var/log/* files: for instance, a collated, time-sorted excerpt of events from all files during the last weekend (hint: grep and sort don't quite suffice; also, /var/log/* doesn't work unless you like the utmp/wtmp junk in your output).
