Fedora has invested a lot on infrastructure that supports other desktop environments including spins.fedoraproject.org and Fedora includes KDE, Xfce etc and Cinnamon is under review at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=771252. There were genuine concerns about the maintenability of MATE and that has nothing to do with pushing GNOME or whatever else.
